How does a RAD child affect a family's day to day life? I am interested in documenting life with RAD children because my brother and his wife adopted 3 children and the two older children have been diagnosed with RAD. Our family had never heard of RAD before or what the implications of this disorder entailed. This attachment disorder is newly founded, researched, and documented within the last 10-15 years.
I want to gain as much knowledge as I can about RAD and how or if I can help my brother's family or others in this same situation. More and more children are abused and/or neglected and these are the children entering our society and our schools. People need to be aware of RAD. My brother wasn't and his dream of having a family has turned into a nightmare.
Nightmare is not even the begining, the whole foster / adoption and government is covering this epidemic up, in hopes of not marring the system, instead of doing anything proactive about it or informing people about it.
ReplyDeleteThe word needs to get out so that these children can get help. There are so many who get diagnosed. This disorder is real and needs to be addressed.
ReplyDeleteI am really interested in your project. We have more and more children each year in our program with challenging behaviors, and maybe this might be the cause of some of them. We have many children who are in the foster care system. I look forward to finding out what you learn.
ReplyDeleteDawn- It sounds like you have your work cut out for you with choosing a topic that is so new. Good for you! Good luck to you and your brother's family.
DeleteIt is a critical issue. If it is not dealt with openly, families won't know the risks. I can see, however, the problem that fear of the worst can have regarding adoptions of older children. Potential adopters and/or foster parents may not realize that every child responds differently to their family circumstances. It also appears that the depth and breadth of family support is also important to the long terms outcomes of the child and family. Thanks for furthering our awareness, Dawn.
ReplyDeleteDawn,
ReplyDeleteI was not aware of RAD prior to talking with you. I cannot wait to read more of your blogs to learn more!
I am so intrigued by your research. I am also so escited to hear all the answers to questions you have. It makes me wonder about all lots of students and misdiagnosis, as well as the foster care system. Very interesting. Can't wait! Emily
